The Suburbs

Asset Creation

I make all the assets for this game in Blender. Not only is it great because it's free, but it's also an excellent and powerful tool. I made all the houses for the game first, because I knew they would be the most time consuming and I wanted to get them out of the way.

These are a couple of the houses that you can't go inside of.  They are all fairly small, and based off houses that I would see growing up. I have always been fond of small craftsman style homes and was excited to incorporate those into my game.

The last one I made was the house that you can go inside of. This was quite a task for me because I messed up multiple times and had to restart, but it is finally at a great point now and works in the game.

You can only access a couple of rooms in the house, but there is a staircase you can go up to get to the player's bedroom.

Here is the bedroom. Doesn't look like much now but I want to fill the room with furniture and toys. I'm hoping to find some of these things online to purchase, but haven't had much luck finding assets that I think would fit. Will probably have to spend a weekend making them myself.

The other assets I have started on are some of the trees. Here are the initial block-outs.

I have to make the leaves next, and then add those.

Things are looking nice in Unity so far. I bought a snow particle effect, and a fog asset and both have been looking great. Now it's time to finish up the trees and do a bit more sketching to plan out more parts of the game.
