The Beginning

Winter Child

This is my second game, and the first game I've ever made in 3D. After spending my winter break learning Blender and Unity 3D at work, I've grown really passionate about 3D games. It's something new and exciting, and I wish I had the chance to explore this more in my college career. But Youtube tutorials have honestly helped me a lot with learning Blender and Substance Painter, so why not give it a shot.

Winter Child will not be a traditional game with traditional mechanics. I am inspired by the games Stanley Parable and The Beginner's Guide, where it is really an interactive story.

I don't want to over explain the story, because honestly I don't even know the full thing myself. I'm basing the game off of my feelings towards growing up and leaving your childhood behind, and mixing that story with my fascination with the unknown. I want to let the story write itself.

Concept Art

I have a vision for the first two scenes of the game to take place in an ordinary house in a seemingly ordinary suburb.

These are the houses I sketched out. So the plan is to make 6 base houses that I can have multiple textures for. I am not taking the traditional route for concept art for this game. I am skipping a lot of the heavier concept art to save time because I only have one semester to make this and there is a lot of assets to create. And because this is a solo project, and I am normally a concept artist, I feel like I have a strong vision for how I want the assets to look in the end. So my concept art mainly consists of very loose sketches, and lots of reference images.

Here I did a quick mood study of the second scene. I painted directly over a screenshot from Unity and used photobashing to get this done quickly.

Here's a portion of the Pinterest board I have with all of my reference images. These range from references for architecture, mood, color, and general inspiration. I always have this open when I am working.
